Nonprofit membership software

Nonprofit membership software is a platform built for 501(c)(3) organizations and other nonprofits to manage members, collect dues and donations, run events, and communicate with supporters in one system.

If your nonprofit has both members and donors, you know the pain of running three tools that do not talk to each other. The new generation of nonprofit platforms consolidates the stack. Here is how to evaluate them.

01 · Evaluation criteria

What to look for.

c/01

Member record that includes donation history

One record per person with both membership and donation history. In Covey, a donation a member adds at join or renewal is part of that dues payment; a separate donor giving history is not in Covey yet.

c/02

Automatic IRS-compliant receipts

Donation receipts generated at time of gift with required tax language, and year-end giving statements every January. Not in Covey yet: Covey does not produce tax receipts or year-end statements.

c/03

Recurring memberships and recurring donations

Separate concepts with separate reporting. A supporter can be a recurring donor, a recurring member, or both. Covey handles recurring memberships and lets members add a donation at join and renewal; standalone recurring donations are not in Covey yet.

c/04

Volunteer management

Volunteer shifts, skills, waivers, and hour tracking. Not in Covey yet: many groups pair Covey with a volunteer tool. Covey can run volunteer days as events with capacity, waitlists, and sign-up questions.

c/05

Board reporting

Board questions answered quickly: active members, dues collected, donations received, event attendance. Covey's Reports page shows members by status and level and event registrations, and payments export for any date range. There is no one-screen board report or volunteer-hour tracking yet.

02 · Buying questions

Questions you should be asking.

What's the best nonprofit membership software?

For nonprofits where membership is the primary program: Covey, Wild Apricot, or MemberClicks. For nonprofits where donations are primary and membership is secondary: Neon CRM, Bloomerang, or Salesforce NPSP.

Is there free nonprofit membership software?

Zeffy offers a free donation platform funded by optional tips. Raklet has a free tier capped at 500 members. Most nonprofits graduate beyond free tiers within a year of scaling.

Can nonprofit membership software handle donations?

Yes. Wild Apricot, Neon and MemberClicks handle recurring memberships alongside one-time or recurring donations, with receipting. Covey takes donations alongside dues at join and renewal, but does not produce tax receipts or year-end statements yet.

How do we handle year-end giving statements?

Look for automatic generation. Neon includes it. Automatic year-end statements are not in Covey yet.

04 · Where Covey fits

We built Covey for this.

Covey is built for organizations in the nonprofit membership software category that want four things at once: a considered interface, transparent pricing, a 48-hour migration, and human support on every plan. If those four things matter to you, Covey is worth a demo. If you need something else (a specific vertical module, an enterprise-scale implementation, a particular integration), we will tell you and point you somewhere that fits.

Considered interface

Legacy membership platforms feel like they were designed in 2008. Covey is built by a small team that treats typography, spacing, and the quiet details as the product.

48-hour human migration

A real human moves your members, levels, and renewal dates from your existing platform and rebuilds your upcoming events and email templates. You're live on Covey inside 48 hours, not six weeks.

100% human support, every plan

No support tiers, no ticket queues that take four business days. Every plan includes a real person answering your questions, often the same person who wrote the feature.

Pricing you can read

One page, plain numbers. Plans are priced by active members, not contacts, and every plan has every feature. Migration is included, onboarding is included, support is included.
