Member directory software
Member directory software is a tool for organizations to publish searchable member directories, either public-facing (for chambers, trade associations) or member-only (for alumni, private clubs, professional associations).
Directories are one of the most-used features of any member platform but the one vendors put the least thought into. Here is what a good directory does.

Fast search that finds the right person. Covey searches by name or organization and filters the public directory by category; filters on custom fields such as class year are not in Covey yet.

SEO controls for public directories
Category pages, individual member pages, schema markup. Chambers and trade associations need members to be findable in Google. Covey's public directory loads on your site with JavaScript and does not create per-member pages, so weigh this if search ranking is your main goal.

Member self-service edits
Members update their own listings from the member portal, and changes go live instantly. Optional admin review is not in Covey yet.

Mobile-friendly
Most directory use is on mobile. Legacy tools fail this test badly.

For bulk updates, syncs, or downstream analytics. Covey exports members to CSV; it has no public API yet.

What's the best member directory software?

Can member directories be SEO-friendly?
Yes, if the platform renders directory pages as real HTML with schema markup. MembershipWorks and a few others do this. Older platforms render directories inside iframes that Google cannot crawl well. Covey's public directory loads with JavaScript and does not create per-member pages.
How does privacy work in member directories?
The best platforms let members choose field by field what other members or the public can see. In Covey, each member makes their whole listing public, members-only, or hidden, and contact details are never shown in the directory.
